Miss Tourism Zimbabwe as 36 models in camp at city hotel
By MCEDISI NKOMO
HARARE - Three dozen beauty queens vying for the coveted Miss Tourism Zimbabwe title are in camp in a Harare hotel ahead of national finals to be held tomorrow at the Harare International Conference Centre. Thirty six contestants who won provincial finals went into camp weekend ahead of the key pageant. Miss Tourism Zimbabwe, Cynthia Muvirimi, a nurse in the UK who courted controversy when she failed to return home for months to resume her reign, will hand over the tiara to a new beauty queen who will represent Zimbabwe at the Miss World Finals next year. A total of 105 countries and regions annually take part in the global show which was held in South Africa this year. Zimbabwe failed to clinch even a single prize in any of the categories, Miss Beauty With A Purpose award, Miss World Sports Woman, Miss World Beach Beauty, Miss World Talent and Miss World Fashion Top Model. Muvirimi performed dismally at the world stage. Infact a series of Zimbabwean beauty queens have failed to bring the coveted Miss World title home. The closest Zimbabwe got to winning any beauty pageant was way back in the 90s when the vivacious Angeline Musasiwa nearly scooped the coveted Miss Malaika. However, despite her dismal performance on world stage, Muvirimi has done so much charitable work inside the country during her reign. She regularly visited several underprivileged people in areas such as Mudzi, Mhondoro, Gweru and Mutoko. She had to give up her job in the UK to serve her country. She has shown commitment to the cause to market her country, discharging her patriotic duty with honor despite the international leper status that Zimbabwe has gained under the tutelage of longtime ruler, Robert Matibili Mugabe. Zimbabwe Tourism Authority chief executive, Karikoga 'Koga' Kaseke, is taking care of the contestants at a Harare hotel and making sure everyone is comfortable. The models have been drawn from the country's ten provinces. So much is at stake here. While it was not immediately clear exactly what prizes the winners would get, a source close to the organization of the pageant said there was a "whooping cash prize", vouchers and holiday packages. Zimdaily heard that a number of experts had been invited to empower the models with knowledge in areas of Zimbabwean tourism and the country's history. The queen will represent the country in the Miss World pageant while the first and second princesses will compete in Miss Tourism World as Miss Tourism Zimbabwe and Miss Tourism Victoria Falls. Miss Tourism Zimbabwe People's Choice will be accorded the chance to market the country's tourism destinations and help in developing tourism in the country. Zimdaily was unable to immediately establish who exactly would sit in the adjudicating panel as organizers were keeping their cards very close to their chests. Divulging names of the adjudicating panel to the public risks influencing the judging decisions, one said. Koga, a vigorous tourism marketer who at times is hostile to the independent press, has reportedly hired Zimbabwe Republic Police officers to ensure the security of the models. He has reportedly made the whole thing huge, inviting top performer Tongai Moyo and his Utakataka Express to clash with undisputed sungura maestro Alick Macheso and his Orchestra Mberikwazvo during the pageant Tuesday. Roki is also billed to perform at the function.
